Tony Hytch

Co-author of the Macmillan Essential English for QCE series.

How long have you been in the education industry?
I have been a teacher since graduating from university in 1995.

How have you noticed your teaching style change over the years? Why do you think this is?
One of the things I have always struggled with has been ensuring that I wasn’t the hardest working person in the room. I now realise that I need to make sure that my students are the ones who are doing most of the work. This change came about as I became more confident in awkward silences in the classroom and developed a deeper understanding of the subject matter I was teaching.

What is the importance to you of good educational resources?
A good educational resource needs to be engaging and relevant. It needs to be accessible to students of all ability levels. It also needs to align with the relevant syllabus documents.

What has been your favourite part of writing an educational resource?

It has forced me to develop a deeper understanding of this subject. It was also an opportunity to explore some great resources which could be used by students and teachers.

What is your favourite part of being a teacher?

Learning from my students and seeing them grow and develop.

What are three things people wouldn’t know about you?
I can make balloon animals, I get lost in shopping centre car parks...every time, and I refuse to eat pumpkin!

What do you like to do when you’re not teaching (or writing?)

I like to keep fit, so I run a lot and get to the gym as often as I can.

Who are three people, living or dead, you’d love to have dinner with?

Barrie Cassidy, Markus Zusak, and my dad.

What is your favourite book and why?
‘Atonement’ by Ian McEwen. I love how unconventional the narrative is and how brutal it is in terms of the lessons the young protagonist is forced to learn.

Do you follow a sports team?
The North Queensland Cowboys.
